Cutcrow Privacy Policy
Effective 24 October 2026
Cutcrow ("we", "us") is a desktop video editor. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Cutcrow app or visit our website.
The short version: Cutcrow runs on your computer. We don't run servers that receive your videos, projects or chats, we don't have accounts, and we don't collect analytics, telemetry or usage data. The only information that leaves your computer because of Cutcrow is listed below. The AI agent you connect (Claude Code or Codex) is a separate program from another company, and what it sends is governed by that company's policy.
What stays on your computer
Everything you make in Cutcrow is stored locally, on your own disk:
- Projects: your timeline, edit history, notes and the files the AI agent makes in the project's workspace folder. Your original media files are only read, never uploaded or changed.
- Chat history: your conversations with the AI agent, saved inside each project folder.
- Media analysis: previews, thumbnails, waveforms, scene changes and speech transcripts. Transcription runs on your computer (whisper.cpp); your audio is never sent anywhere for it.
- Settings and your list of recent projects.
- Crash notices: if Cutcrow closes unexpectedly, the next launch reads your computer's own system logs to explain why. This stays on your computer.
These live in Cutcrow's folders: on Linux ~/.local/share/com.cutcrow.app and ~/.cache/com.cutcrow.app, on Windows %APPDATA%\com.cutcrow.app and %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.cutcrow.app, plus your project folders (by default Videos/Cutcrow).
Kept in your system's secure storage (GNOME Keyring or KWallet on Linux, Credential Manager on Windows, Keychain on macOS). If your computer has no secure storage (some Linux setups), your licence is kept instead in a private file in Cutcrow's data folder that only your user account can read:
- your licence key, the email address of the purchase it belongs to, and when it was activated;
- any Anthropic or OpenAI API key you choose to save in Cutcrow.
You can delete all of this at any time: remove the licence and keys in Settings, and delete the folders above.
What Cutcrow sends, and to whom
Cutcrow itself connects to the internet only for these things:
- Licence checks, with Gumroad. When you activate a licence key, and at most once every 7 days afterwards, Cutcrow sends the key and our product ID to Gumroad (our payment provider) to check that it's valid and hasn't been refunded. Gumroad replies with details of the purchase, including its email address, which Cutcrow keeps on your computer to show which purchase the licence belongs to. Being offline never stops Cutcrow from working. Gumroad's own privacy policy covers your purchase: https://gumroad.com/privacy.
- Updates. When you check for updates (or automatically every few hours, if that setting is on), Cutcrow downloads a small file from GitHub, where we publish our updates, to see whether a newer version exists. If there is one and your copy can update itself, Cutcrow downloads the new version from there too. Like any web request, this reveals your IP address and app version to GitHub. We don't use it to identify you or keep logs for any other purpose.
- Speech models. The first time you transcribe, or when you pick another speech model, Cutcrow downloads it from Hugging Face. Nothing about your media is sent.
- Skills, with GitHub. When you search for or install skills in Settings → Skills, Cutcrow sends your search words to GitHub's API, lists the files of the repositories you open, and downloads the skill you install. Separately, shortly after you first open Cutcrow (and after an update that changes them), it downloads Remotion's official video skills from Remotion's GitHub repository and switches them on; you can turn them off or remove them in Settings → Skills. Like any web request, this reveals your IP address to GitHub. GitHub's privacy statement: https://docs.github.com/site-policy/privacy-policies/github-general-privacy-statement.
- Links you open, such as help pages, open in your web browser.
On Windows, the installer may also download Microsoft's WebView2 runtime from Microsoft if your computer doesn't already have it.
We don't sell, rent or share your information, and there are no ads or third-party trackers in Cutcrow.
The AI agent you connect
Cutcrow doesn't contain an AI model. It works with an AI agent you install and sign into yourself: Claude Code (from Anthropic) or Codex (from OpenAI). Nothing is connected until you choose to connect one.
When you use an agent, Cutcrow starts it on your computer and gives it what it needs to edit:
- your messages, the files you attach, and what's selected on your timeline;
- through Cutcrow's tools, details of your project: the timeline, your Board notes, file names and locations, transcripts, and frames from your videos when it asks for them;
- the project's workspace folder, where it can create and change files.
Depending on the permissions you give it, the agent can also run commands, read other files on your computer and use the internet. With "Run any command" on, which is the default, it does those things without asking you first; turn it off in Settings → Commands and Cutcrow asks you before each one.
The agent sends what it works with to its own company (Anthropic or OpenAI) to generate its responses, under your account with them and their privacy policies:
- Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- OpenAI: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
If you save an API key in Cutcrow, it is given only to that agent's sessions inside Cutcrow, which use it to bill your Anthropic or OpenAI account. We never see your agent account, your sign-in or your API keys, and Cutcrow never sends them to us.
Cutcrow's connection to the agent stays on your computer: its tool server only accepts connections from your own machine, protected by a random password that changes every session.
Our website
Our website is a single static page. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising trackers and sets no cookies of its own. To show the page, your browser loads fonts from Google Fonts, some example videos from Mixkit and our Product Hunt badge from Product Hunt; like any web request, that reveals your IP address to them. Buying Cutcrow, your licence key and your downloads are handled on Gumroad, under Gumroad's privacy policy: https://gumroad.com/privacy.
Children
Cutcrow isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone.
Your rights
Because we don't hold your projects, chats or usage data, there's usually nothing on our side to access or delete. For your purchase record, contact Gumroad or us. Depending on where you live (for example under the UAE's Personal Data Protection Law, the GDPR or the CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you; email us and we'll help.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and describe important changes in the release notes. If a change means Cutcrow starts sending something new, we'll ask first.
